IEEE 5G and Instrumentation and Measurement Society

Society

im society logoThe IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS) was organized in 1950 to focus on the science, technology and application of instrumentation and measurement. Communication and cooperation among measurement scientists enhances results in every field of technology because measurement is ubiquitous. The IMS technical committee on Wireless and Telecommunications in Measurement works to explore and establish innovative measurement principles for the new and emerging fields of telecommunications and to establish standards for telecommunication.

IMS is supportive of the 5G initiative, as this represents a field of interest from the instrumentation and measurement perspectives. Additionally, IoT enabled by 5G is of significant importance for IMS.

Conferences

ims conferencesThe International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC) is the annual flagship conference of the IEEE IMS. It is an international technical forum for disseminating and exchanging information concerning the science and application of instrumentation and measurement accomplished through technical conference sessions, exhibits, tutorials and publication of conference papers. I2MTC is a meeting place where scientists, engineers, students and others discuss information relative to specific disciplines and areas of interest, including measurement and instrumentation for telecommunications. IMS also sponsors various other conferences in related fields.

Journals

ims transactionsIEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement (TIM) is a highly rated exclusive publication of scholarly papers on the advancement of the science of instrumentation and measurement.

ims magazineIEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Magazine presents a broader view of pertinent topics in this area, with articles and columns ranging from measurement tutorials to instrumentation reviews.

Applications of instrumentation and measurement to the field of telecommunications, including the emerging 5G systems, are published within our journals. To help prospective 5G authors understand the scope of the journals, the following overview paper has been made available in Open Access: L. Angrisani, D. Petri and M. Yeary, "Instrumentation and Measurement in Communication Systems", IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Magazine, vol. 18, no. 2, pp. 4-10, Apr. 2015.

Education

ims educationThe IMS Education Committee administers programs that promote the dissemination of instrumentation and measurement culture and improve education in I&M.  We provide support for students and educators through awards for graduate research and course development by faculty members.  The very popular Distinguished Lecturer program has provided highly qualified speakers for chapters around the world in a number of current topics, including I&M for telecommunications. An all-new video tutorial program makes useful and hot-topic lectures available on demand via the society’s website.
