A Functional Overview of CUDA and DUDA

Chih-Lin I, Junshuai Sun, Xingyu Han, Yingying Wang, Xueyan Huang, Green Communication Research Center, China Mobile Research Institute, Beijing, P. R. China

The wireless communication network, especially 5G, is coming to an era of Big Data (BD). This article explores the feasibility to apply Data Analytics (DA) into CU-DU (Central Unit-Distributed Unit) architecture adopted by 5G New Radio (NR), and presents possible functional designs for CUDA and DUDA separately, aiming at giving heuristic considerations on the combination of ICT and DT.

Integration of 5G Technologies in LEO Mega-Constellations

Alessandro Guidotti, Oltjon Kodheli, and Alessandro Vanelli-Coralli, Univ. of Bologna, Bologna, Italy and Giulio Colavolpe and Tommaso Foggi, University of Parma, Parma, Italy

3GPP is finalising the first release of the 5G New Radio physical layer. To cope with the demanding 5G requirements on global connectivity and large throughput, Satellite Communications might be a valuable resource to extend and complement terrestrial networks. In this context, we introduce an integrated architecture for 5G-based LEO mega-constellations and assess the impact of large Doppler shifts and delays on both the 5G waveform and the PHY/MAC layer procedures.

Orchestrating 5GC in Distributed Cloud Networks

Anwer Al-Dulaimi, EXFO, Canada and Qiang Ni, Lancaster University, UK

The network function virtualization (NFV) is a concept to virtualize mobile network appliances from proprietary hardware to run as guest software applications on standard commercial servers. In the cloud environment, a hypervisor is computer software that provides guest applications with the necessary virtual resources and interfaces to function at performance. The orchestrator platform provides the workflow engine that automates hypervisor operations and integration with third-party tools. In this article, we identify scenarios for orchestrating the fifth-generation core network (5GC) to manage network services in distributed cloud architecture. We show how orchestrators and hypervisors can support sliced and scalable virtual 5GC at both core and edge network sites.

Reimagining the Edge with 5G: A Closer Look at Traffic Patterns

Kaniz Mahdi and Paul Littlewood, Ciena

Fundamentals of wireless networks have remained essentially static through the evolution of radio from 2G to 3G to 4G, designed mainly to provide connectivity for (geographically dispersed) human communications, with some provision for machine type communication. However, 5G era networks are expected to serve a user environment that is significantly more complex than that of today, as 5G, with its broad range of new radio characteristics and capabilities, benefits from new market dynamics being shaped by SDN/NFV, and technology advancements in M2M communications, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. This paper looks at the changes expected in optical networks to mirror the new capabilities being designed into 5G wireless networks. A richer connectivity structure will be necessary to ensure economic support of network applications distributed across the metro cloud, and to support the latency sensitive mobile applications enabled by low latency 5G wireless systems.
